Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, similar to finasteride. It works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that plays a significant role in the miniaturization and shrinking of hair follicles in androgenetic alopecia. By inhibiting the production of DHT, dutasteride helps to slow down hair loss, improve hair density, and promote regrowth in individuals with pattern hair loss.
While dutasteride is commonly available in oral form for the treatment of enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), its topical application for hair loss treatment is considered an off-label use. Topical dutasteride formulations are not as widely available as oral finasteride or topical minoxidil, which are more commonly used for hair loss treatment. However, topical dutasteride is prescribed by some doctors when topical finasterie does not work.
